The main characteristics of color. Crib on painting.

My teacher of history at school, Irina Dudina, every time came up with some new, fun ways to remember the most boring information, sometimes even quite absurd, right on Harms.

For example, to remember the marshals of the Great Patriotic war, she constantly repeated and asked to repeat us at any free moment during the preparation for the exam: ”Zhukov, Konev, Rokossovsky! Zhukov, Konev, Rokossovsky!". Apparently, I am a very diligent student or just a very effective method, because even now, if I Wake up in the middle of the night and ask such a question, I do not hesitate to drop out the memorized phrase.

If you apply this episode to our theme, the study of fine arts, it can be quite effective for remembering, at first glance, meaningless, the three main characteristics of color.  This is the color tone, lightness and saturation. Let us deal on order.

Color tone: roughly speaking, this is the name of the color in which the object is painted (red, purple, emerald, green or my favorite, gray-brown-incomprehensible).  Usually, this color is correlated with the colors of the color circle (red-orange, purple, etc.) and it appears on the object itself somewhere on the border between light and shadow, as due to the color of lighting, this color changes. For example, when the yellow light, the shadows on the object becomes blue-purple, and the shade of color of the object visually mixed with light yellowing (we'll talk about this in detail in a later article).  So, color tone-the main color connotation, without impurities (reflexes and reflex, too, not in expense).

Lightness - is the simplest property of color. We can easily see the difference, for example, between burgundy and pink, right? However, in this case, the color spectrum is close to them red, and pink and burgundy already changed its shades of light (light - pink, dark - burgundy). Color one-red, and its light is different. I hope so.

Remained saturation. This characteristic of color I have already started to analyze in the article about green cats.  For clarity, consider the color of the sky at different times of the year: it varies from bright turquoise to cloudy gray, that is, the color can be clean or “cloudy”. This change is called saturation.  When to clean, open color is mixed equal to it in the light shade of gray, the color loses its saturation (clouded). For example, when you choose jeans, look for the best shade for yourself: from bright blue to almost colorless gray, from blue to Indigo, in addition to lightness, it is also a change in saturation. Thus, the color can be saturated-close to the color spectrum or low - saturated - gray, black, white with a slight color shade.

For better assimilation of all material, I will tell one more story. A pricker I to itself somehow a white jacket (about 20 years ago it was very fashionable!). Chose fabric which suited me on quality and a shade, cut out, swept away, sewed, adjusted on a figure. It remains the case for hardware. Usually, picking up the buttons, I take with me a piece of cloth from which the product is sewn to carefully choose the shade. “And here, what to pick up?  Jacket-white”, I thought, and went into the shop without a sample of the fabric. When I came to the window with buttons, I gasped: all the white buttons were of different shades: from grayish-lilac to almost ochre. Had to remember which shade of color was my jacket and choose on your own risk. Needless to say that in the shade I did not get, and on my gently-gently pink jacket was almost dark yellowish buttons.

In my story, both the color of the clothes and the color of the buttons were not very saturated, but they had a different shade of color and lightness: the accessories turned out to be darker than the fabric and closer to the yellow-orange color, compared to the pinkish, almost neutral color of the fabric.

So, on all three characteristics can be spell out any color. That's what we do in painting lessons. This is what allows you to create realistic images, not just paint objects with ready-made colors from a set of colors. And, if you certainly decided to engage in painting in practice, without this theoretical tips will be difficult. Dare, study colors and their interactions, observe and analyze. And, of course, do not forget from time to time to repeat the patter: ”Color tone, lightness, saturation!  Color tone, lightness, saturation!".
